Roles and Duties

The County of Hawaii Fire Department is tasked with the delivery of a myriad of essential public services that include fire protection and prevention, pre-hospital emergency medical services, land and sea search and rescue, and hazardous materials response.

Major Goals and Objectives

The primary goals and objectives of the Fire Department evolve around its commitment to minimize losses associated with fires and other catastrophic events. Obviously, the protection and preservation of life is paramount; however, the Fire Department is also committed to reducing and minimizing the loss of property.

Achievement of these goals and objectives is facilitated by:

bulletThe establishment and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan
bulletThe acquisition and effective allocation of resources
bulletThe constant evaluation of performance measures.

Although the fire department has been significantly impacted by a substantial personnel shortage, it continues to deliver critical services. One objective identified for the next three years is to establish a progressive recruitment and training program in conjunction with a thorough pre-employment evaluation and selection process. A critical component of the pre-employment selection process that has been developed and implemented during this past year is a background and reference check process. Prospective candidates are screened to assure compatibility and high probability for success in supporting the department's mission and values.
